Liar Liar Pants on fire!

I really like this line! I do not know what it’s implications are , but I do know that it is the apt thing to say to most men I know or have heard about!

It’s like this. The lies are generally harmless. It could be staying back at work to chat with friends and lying about working late. It could be going to watch cricket match with friends and lying about it. It could be chatting with friends who are girls and hiding it. Where is the requirement for lying in these scenarios? None, according to me!

The only reason, I feel there is for this, is the guilt feeling. Something more important didn’t get done because of their deed. Well, that’s ok too. If you could ignore that important task, it wouldn’t have been life threatening. Why lie? Why not just face up to the situation and admit that “It slipped my mind!” or “I didn’t think that task was that important!”. Why give excuses, when you can just say the truth!

I am just wondering why it is so difficult for people to tell the truth. What justification is there for the lies?  It doesn’t take long for a smart women to find out about these lies. What results is an argument and total waste of time and energy. In the process, what gets broken ,is the trust between two people.

It’s a general assumption that women are a suspicious lot! Really? Is it really surprising WHY they are?

This is what I learnt about the Phrase:

The origins of the phrase are not in question. It is a paraphrased version of the 1810 poem “The Liar” by William Blake, reprinted here in full.

Deceiver, dissembler
Your trousers are alight
From what pole or gallows
Shall they dangle in the night?

When I asked of your career
Why did you have to kick my rear
With that stinking lie of thine
Proclaiming that you owned a mine?
When you asked to borrow my stallion
To visit a nearby moored galleon
How could I ever know that you
Intended to turn him into glue?

What red devil of mendacity
Grips your soul with such tenacity?
Will one you cruelly shower with lies
Put a pistol ball between your eyes?
What internal serpent
Has lent you his forked tongue?
From what pit of foul deceit
Are all these whoppers sprung?
Deceiver, dissembler
Your trousers are alight
From what pole or gallows
Do they dangle in the night?

Blake, a romantic known for his colorful use of supernatural and ballistic imagery, pretty much settled the question of whether or not honesty is the best policy with that poem.

  1. Hey,Two types:-1. Lie to harm or gain benefit2. Lie to protect others or avoid unnecessary worries or avoid unnecessary argumentI do not have problem with second kind.First kind is really bad….It is not difficult for people to always tell truth if everyone does the same….but you know the reality of life.

  2. yeah i guess we all succummb to this , we all od lie now and then , I do hate people who lie.. and I simply stop talking ot them end of. I mean why lie when to hide that lie we got to lie a load more.. Bikram's

  3. @A – A lie is a lie either way! Everyone has the right to know the truth. :)@Bikram – Exactly. There is always never just one “lie”. It becomes a series of lies. The authenticity of the person then gets questioned.@Ramesh – Yes, he is. :)@Kavita – YES, that is the biggest problem. “Trust” is a very difficult commodity to obtain as it is.
