Urad Dal (whole) – 1 cup
Idli / Dosa Rice – 2 cups
Salt to Taste.


  1. Soak the Urad and Rice separately for 8 hours or overnight.
  2. Grind the Rice into a not so smooth consistency.
  3. Grind the urad dal into a smooth consistency.
  4. Mix the two paste together and add salt and mix well. And let it ferment for 8 hours or overnight.
  5. Boil water in the Idli Maker.
  6. Grease the idli moulds with a little oil and fill them upto ¾ capacity.
  7. Place the moulds inside the Idli dish and cook for 10 minutes or till done.
  8. Remove the moulds from the Idli Dish and sprinkle some lukewarm water on it. Leave aside for a minute
  9. Remove the Idlis from the Moulds with a spoon or a butter knife.
  10.  Serve with Chutney or Sambhar.
