You might want to read the previous chapters of Falling Apart before reading this chapter.
She was soaking wet when she entered her apartment that day. Shreya had to work late on the project and by the time her colleague dropped her home, it was already 8 pm. Rama was at the door waiting for her daughter to come home. She soon realized that her daughter was not in the mood for any conversation when she came in.
Rama went into the kitchen to prepare coffee and a sandwich for her daughter. Bangalore weather is the best, she thought. But right now her mind was preoccupied with something else. She wasn’t sure how to bring out the topic into a discussion with her daughter. It had been almost 7 months since she came to Bangalore for her project.
Shreya was busy with the work that she enjoyed doing the most. Even after coming back home she was forever on her laptop doing some task or the other. It annoyed her mother no end that her daughter gave all her attention to her job and so conveniently neglected her family.
When her daughter came from a short visit to Dubai, Rama was shocked to hear that Nayan was planning to quit his job and was planning to start a business. She thought it was too early for such a decision. She obviously had no choice in the matter. But if it were up to her she would try and put some sense into her son-in-law. They had three children now. God forbid, if the business doesn’t do well, what will become of their future? Shreya had just started her job again and she was sent here on a project this early in her career because she needed to be updated on the latest in her field. This was more of a training that a project for her.
Nischal was just over a year old and Shreya had left him in the care of the Nanny to come to Bangalore! This is something that she couldn’t understand. She had tried to talk to Shreya about it, but her daughter would get angry and say that her career was important to her and because of the long break she took, a good job was hard to come by. She wasn’t willing to lose this opportunity.
In a way, Shreya was right, she was planning to get back to work when Shikha started school. But Nischal’s arrival had spoilt all her plans. Rama realized that this must be the reason why Nayan was trying to spend more time with the kids. Shreya had taken care of them single handedly all these years. Now at least Nayan has a live maid to help him.
She headed towards Shreya’s room with coffee and the plate in her hand. What she saw in her room was not a happy, thrilled or excited Shreya. What she witnessed was a small child curled up in bed. She had already dried herself and freshened up. She was at present hugging a photo of her kids that she had brought when she came back from Dubai.
Rama couldn’t say anything to her daughter that day. Once a child is old enough to make her own decisions, it is better to just be around them and support them as much as they could. Nobody really knows what is happening inside a person. She hugged her daughter, kept the food on the bedside table and left the room before she lost control of her emotions.
