The Nanny

The Nanny

It was a wonderful evening when they had all their friends and family over to celebrate Nischal’s second birthday. Shreya was reunited with her family in Dubai.

Of course , all days are not the same. But everything was perfect in their life during those months after her one year stay in India. The kids were happy to have their parents around. Once the clock struck 6pm everyday, the couple handled only emergency official work. The evenings were dedicated to their kids and themselves.

Although there were raised voices in the house even during the next few years, none were as frightening as that first time when Nayan lost his temper. The children adjusted well to the routine. When Nischal started school the next year, he felt like a very important person being able to leave the house with his parents and sisters.

***

Mina, the Nanny , has the whole house to herself in the mornings till Nischal got home. She would finish all her work by the time his bus arrived and would spend the rest of the time playing with Nischal till his sisters arrived. She absolutely adored the boy. She was taking care of him since he was three months old. She had grown to love him like her own son.

Mina had lost her father to a car accident when she was 8. He was a truck driver and lost his life on one of the highways that he frequented. Leaving behind his young wife and two young children. Her brother Manoj was 4 years younger than her. Her mother had to work in many houses as maid to provide her children with food and shelter. She managed to send both her kids to school till the day she fell sick and could not work anymore. Mina was 16 then. She had to discontinue her studies and start working in those very homes that her mother used to work at.

When she came across the advertisement for a Nanny in Dubai, she thought that it would be a chance for her to earn better and give her brother and mother a better life. She called up the number that was mentioned. Soon she took down the address of the lady who had given the advertisement and made plans to go visit her for the interview.

***

Rama was surprised as to how young and pretty the girl was.  She was soft spoken and polite too. Housework , she said , she was good at. She also claimed that she was good with children. Her life so far was a tough one and Rama thought that the girl should be given a chance. She looked decent enough. She called up the references that the girl provided. The ladies had only good things to say about her.

The last time Shreya has requested a maid, Rama had managed to get an old lady. She used to tire fast. Now there were three kids to manage. That meant a lot more of energy. Mina might be the one destined to take care of her grandchildren , Rama thought. The selection was made. The fact that Mina already had a passport ready and was willing to leave for Dubai anytime the visa was ready , had sealed the deal in favour of Mina.
